Frankfort
Spohn Disposal will provide Sanitation and Recycling Pickup in the Village of Frankfort.
Residents have the option to use either garbage bags or toters. Please note: residents who do not participate in the waste system do not receive service for recycling. bulk disposal, or green waste pick-ups.
Household Trash
- If you choose to continue to use the Village of Frankfort bags they will be available at the following locations:
- Melrose Supermarket, 208 East Main Street
- County Farms Grocery Store, 133 West Main Street
- Cost for the bags will be: Large $2.40 - Small $1.90
- If you choose to participate in the toter system, please contact the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority Office by e-mail at ohswa@ohswa.org or by telephone at 733-1224 to be set up with a container.
- Cost for the toters/carts will be: 32 gallon - $45.00/Quarter, 64 gallon - $57.00/Quarter, 95 gallon - $71.00/Quarter. Payments will be made quarterly in advance.
Large Quantities of Trash
- Call a private hauler to rent a dumpster. This would include all construction and demolition material.
- Small pieces of wood, lumber or construction debris can be placed in toters or Village trash bags.
- Wood, lumber or construction debris is not considered brush, yard waste or bulk items

Rules for Setting Out Garbage
- Garbage and non-metal bulk items will be collected on Monday.
- Garbage should NOT be out before 3:00 PM and SHOULD be out before 12:00 AM Sunday midnight. Bags SHOULD NOT EXCEED 50 pounds.
- If garbage and/or recyclables are not picked up, please call Spohn's Disposal Service at 866-8820 or OHSWA at 733-1224.
Rules for Setting Out Recyclables
Collection Day for Recyclables is now MONDAY.
You no longer need to purchase a special recycling bag for recyclables.
- Recyclables must be separated into 2 groups – Paper Group and Container Group
- Recyclables are to be put out the same day and time as your garbage and placed in a large clear plastic bag or in a reusable container.
- Paper group consists of cardboard, boxes, newspapers, brown paper bags, glossy ads, magazines, phone books, junk mail, envelopes, letters, computer paper, school paper, cardboard tubes, cereal, tissue and pizza boxes.
- Paper group items should be placed in reusable containers, brown paper bags, or clear large plastic bags.
- Boxes such as cereal, tissue, and other non-corrugated should be flattened.
- Corrugated cardboard must be flattened and bundled NOT to exceed 2 feet by 2 feet by 8 inches.
- DO NOT use cardboard boxes as a container.
- Container group consists of clear and colored glass jars and bottles, tin cans, aluminum cans, aluminum foil items, plastic bottles and containers with a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 in the recycling triangle.
- All containers must be cleaned, lids must be removed and discarded.
- Container group items should be placed in reusable containers or clear large plastic bags separate from the paper group.
DO NOT PLACE BAGS OF PLASTIC BAGS WITH THE RECYCLABLE ITEMS, PLASTIC GROCERY STORE BAGS ARE NOT RECYCLABLE UNDER OUR SYSTEM.
STYROFOAM PACKAGING IS NOT RECYCLABLE, place all Styrofoam in a clear plastic bag by itself.
Other items NOT RECYCLABLE are plastic toys, light bulbs, window glass, dishes, flower pots, cooking wares, wood, plaster/wallboard, oil containers, hardcover books, ceiling tile, pails, and clothes hangers. Please dispose as garbage in Village bags or toters/carts.
Rules for Setting Out Bulk Items
- ONE bulk item per each property may be put out on the same day as your garbage pick-up (i.e. a dining table set of one table and four chairs is five items, which will take five weeks to dispose of).
- Bulk items are defined as large household items (i.e.: couch, chair, mattress, table, TV, rugs, lamp, cabinet etc.).
- Items must not be too large or heavy for two men to lift.
- NO WOOD, LUMBER CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS, PLASTER, WALLBOARD, OR PLYWOOD WILL BE ACCEPTED AS BULK ITEMS.
Steel, Metal Items, Major Appliances and White Goods
- Collected on the first and third Friday of each month.
- All pick-ups are to be called in to the Village of Frankfort DPW Office at 894-1238 or Spohn's Disposal Company at 866-8820 to be put on a pick-up list. Please state what type of material is to be picked up (washer, dryer, freezer, refrigerator etc.) so that the special collection arrangements can be made.
Green Waste Collection
- Set out Sunday night for Monday pick-up. (May 1st–October 31st)
- Green waste should be free of stones, lumber, wood, paper, plastic pots/trays, or animal waste.
- ALL GREEN WASTE MUST BE PLACED IN A REUSABLE CONTAINER ONLY.
- NO PLASTIC BAGS CAN BE USED.
- BRUSH AND SHRUBBERY CANNOT EXCEED FOUR FEET AND MUST BE PLACED IN A REUSABLE CONTAINER OR TIED AND BUNDLED.
- No container should exceed 50 pounds.
- Christmas trees will be collected at the end of December and during January.
Fall Leaf Collection
The Village of Frankfort DPW will continue to pick up seasonal leaves in the Fall. Leaves must be placed loose at the curb for collection. Scheduling and preparation for this service will be announced by the Village of Frankfort DPW.
Tires
Residents can take them directly to the Solid Waste Authority’s Residential Convenience Station on Leland Ave. in Utica or contact a private hauler to have them removed.
Used Oil
Take to a service station, oil redemption center or the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority’s Residential Convenience Station in Utica.
