SET UP RECYCLING BINS AND GARBAGE CANS

Through the waste review, you were able to identify what items are accepted for recycling and what items are not. Now, you need to ensure that your entire business is set up and ready to begin recycling.

  • Place clear and visible labels on every recycling bin.
  • Place a recycling bin next to every trash can. If you are in need of recycling containers, contact the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority for free recycling boxes.
  • Work with facility staff to make sure recycling is being collected and stored properly for pickup.
  • Request RecycleOne posters from the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority to display above recycling bins or in high-generation areas that display the simple recycling guidelines.

 

CLOSING THE LOOP – ADOPT A “BUY RECYCLED” POLICY

An important aspect of any waste reduction/recycling program is creating outlets for recyclable materials by purchasing recycled products. Buying products in large quantities can also save money. All businesses and companies should purchase various recycled paper products including: copier paper, letterhead and envelopes, file folders, note pads and other recycled paper products. There are many other products containing recycled materials: plastic trash and recycling containers, janitorial supplies, cleaning equipment such as mops and broom handles and fittings, rubber floor and fatigue mats, building and insulating materials, carpeting, paneling, and parking lot bumpers. Your purchasing office should check with suppliers for information on recycled and recyclable materials.

OTHER RECYCLING OPPORTUNITIES FOR BUSINESSES

Each business generates different types of wastes, many of which are recyclable, depending on market conditions.

Schools, office complexes, banks and other financial firms generate large quantities of paper; manufacturers may produce large amounts of scrap metals and plastics; and retailers may produce large quantities of corrugated cardboard. The names of companies that buy waste materials are often listed with a Google local search or found in the Yellow Pages under Scrap Dealers or Recyclers.
