The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (Authority) is pleased to announce that Harbor Point Mineral Products (Harbor Point), located at 71 Wurz Ave in Utica, has obtained the Authority’s RecycleOne Business Certification.
The RecycleOne Business Certification requires an on-site review from Authority staff to verify that specific solid waste management, recycling and energy reduction criteria have been achieved. If the criteria have been achieved, the Authority will issue the facility or business an official RecycleOne Business Certification.
This certification is free and available to all businesses located in Oneida and Herkimer counties. Accepted businesses will receive RecycleOne logos, posters, and relevant recycling information. RecycleOne Businesses are featured on the Authority’s website and will be eligible to win the Authority’s annual Recycling Champion Award.
Harbor Point has been supplying vitamins, minerals and other specialty products to animal feed companies since 1993. While based in Utica, Harbor Point processes raw ingredients from all over the world in order to provide quality nutrition for various types of animals.
Harbor Point is diligently working to reduce waste at their facility by:
- Recycling approximately 24 bales of office paper each year
- Baling over 11 tons of supersacks* annually that are then marketed for recycling
- Consistently recycling all scrap metal and motor oil
- Converting all lightbulbs to energy efficient LEDs
- Promoting office recycling of aluminum cans and plastic bottles
“A lot of the material we ship and receive at Harbor Point is loaded in supersacks (*bulk containers made of woven polyethylene), which are traditionally difficult to recycle. We did manage to find a facility that can market them as recyclables, and now we generate as many bales of supersacks each year as we do bales of paper… all of which is kept out of the local landfill. Reducing waste is important to us, and we believe that the RecycleOne Certification Program will help to maintain and strengthen recycling efforts here at Harbor Point. We are glad to join the team,” says Keith Crane, Director of Safety & Regulations at Harbor Point Mineral Products.
“Harbor Point has been very proactive with their recycling program and have done an excellent job, especially considering that they often handle material that can be challenging to recycle. Specialty businesses like this add to the diversity of our RecycleOne Certification Program and help the Authority better understand the needs of businesses in our area. Harbor Point is very deserving of this certification,” says Emily Albright, Authority Director of Recycling.
Recycling in the workplace not only helps the environment, but can be economically advantageous by allowing for lower costs for waste removal and possible revenues from recycling. The program also encourages social responsibility, positive public response and sustainability.
