The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (Authority) is pleased to announce that the Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce (Chamber), located at 420 East German Street in Herkimer, has obtained the Authority’s RecycleOne Business Certification.
The RecycleOne Business Certification requires an on-site review from Authority staff to verify that specific solid waste management, recycling and energy reduction criteria have been achieved. If the criteria have been achieved, the Authority will issue the facility or business an official RecycleOne Business Certification.
This certification is free and available to all businesses located in Oneida and Herkimer counties. Accepted businesses will receive RecycleOne logos and updated quarterly recycling information. RecycleOne Businesses are featured on the Authority’s website and will be eligible to win the Authority’s annual Recycling Champion Award.
The Herkimer Chamber was established in 1968 to help connect and promote businesses in Herkimer County. The Chamber is a 350 member organization that helps businesses both grow their customer base and communicate effectively with other member organizations. The Chamber also handles tourist inquiries and helps to spread the word on all the wonderful activities, businesses, and sight-seeing locations in the beautiful and historic Herkimer County.
Originally based in Mohawk, NY, the Chamber has spent 7 years at their new location on German St. The office itself was retrofitted to save energy and resources, and the Authority found that the Chamber helps to conserve energy and reduce waste in the following ways:
- Regular recycling of paper, plastic, metal and glass
- Exclusive office use of organic and environmentally friendly cleaning supplies
- Installation of motion-censored lights to conserve energy
“Our office itself is small. However, the Chamber’s presence in the community is woven into our network of over 350 local businesses. Recycling as well as solid waste reduction helps businesses run more effectively and can save them money and resources, and so we are very pleased to be a part of the RecycleOne community,” says Michele Hummel, Office Manager at the Chamber.
“The Chamber does important work to ensure that their member businesses are growing and thriving. Recycling and waste reduction is an integral part of the way business is conducted in both Oneida and Herkimer County. The motto of the Chamber is to promote Herkimer County as ‘A Great Place to Live, to Visit, and Make a Living,’ and recycling efforts help to do just that. The Authority is happy to award the Herkimer Chamber with this certification,” says Emily Albright, Authority Director of Recycling.
Recycling in the workplace not only helps the environment, but can be economically advantageous by allowing for lower costs for waste removal and possible revenues from recycling. The program also encourages social responsibility, positive public response and sustainability.
