The opening of Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority’s (Authority) Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHW) which normally opens on April 1st each year is postponed until further notice.
The postponement of the 28th annual household hazardous waste collection season in Oneida and Herkimer Counties is in accordance with State and National guidelines that serve to limit public gatherings and help reduce COVID-19 exposure for people across the country.
The Authority asks that residents safely store household hazardous waste items until further notice. While the Authority has not determined an opening date for the facility at this time, residents can stay tuned for updated announcements on the Authority’s website (www.ohswa.org) and Facebook page (Oneida Herkimer Solid Waste Authority).
The household hazardous waste program was designed to accept waste products from homes that can cause problems for our environment when discarded improperly. Examples of wastes accepted include oil-based and latex paints, pesticides, oven cleaners and photographic chemicals. Some items, such as electronics, motor oil, propane cylinders (under 100 lbs.) and fluorescent light bulbs, are accepted year-round. There is no charge for residents to drop off these items.
For more information on household hazardous waste disposal, please call the Authority office at (315) 733-1224 or visit the website at www.ohswa.org. The Authority also encourages residents and businesses to visit www.AmIRecyclable.com, which provides users with a tool to quickly search thousands of items for proper recycling and disposal methods.
