Solid Waste Authority Partners with Herkimer County to Host Electronics Recycling Event

electronics recycling event

The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (Authority) and Herkimer County are sponsoring an Electronics Recycling Event for all residents of Herkimer County.

The one-day event will allow residents to drop-off unwanted or outdated electronics for recycling at no charge. The event will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the Walmart Parking Lot located at 103 N Caroline Street, Herkimer, NY 13350.

The following are examples of acceptable material: Computers, Computer Hardware and Monitors; Televisions; Fax Machines; Printers; Radios; Cell Phones; CD, DVD, Blu-Ray & VCR Players; Electronic Gaming Systems; Battery Chargers; Small Kitchen Appliances, etc.

Many electronics contain elements such as lead, mercury and cadmium that are considered safe when the items are used as directed, but can become hazardous if disposed of with household trash and compacted at landfills. If improperly handled, these toxins can be released into the environment, posing a threat to human health.

In addition to this one-day event, the Authority accepts electronic waste for recycling year-round, at no charge. Electronics can be delivered to the Authority’s EcoDrop Utica (824 Sewage Plant Road, Utica) or EcoDrop Rome (575 Perimeter Rd., Rome) during normal business hours (Mon. – Fri., 8 AM – 4 PM; Sat. 7 AM – 2 PM (Utica); or Sat. 8 AM – 12 PM (Rome). Businesses and institutions must schedule an appointment prior to delivering electronics by calling (315) 733-1224.

After the Authority accepts electronic waste, it is sent to a registered electronics dismantler who separates electronics into various raw materials such as plastic, glass, steel, copper, lead, gold and aluminum for recycling or reuse.
