Every year, the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (Authority) recognizes one certified RecycleOne Business that has taken the initiative to reduce their business’ solid waste stream through reduction, recycling and proper disposal. This year, the Authority has chosen to award Twin Rivers Paper Company (Twin Rivers) located in Little Falls, NY with the Recycling Champion Award.
Twin Rivers is one of the four businesses that the Authority recognized in 2022 as RecycleOne Certified, for a total of 45 RecycleOne Certified Businesses in Oneida and Herkimer Counties. Every certified business becomes eligible for the Recycling Champion Award in any year after they become certified. The RecycleOne Certification Program is free and available to all businesses in Oneida and Herkimer Counties.
Twin Rivers produces a wide range of specialty paper products including those used in food, medical and technical markets. Applications include grease-resistant food packaging paper for fast food and quick service restaurants, coffee filtration papers, battery pasting papers, hydroentanglement for fiber-based wipes, and exam table paper. Twin Rivers’ Little Falls locations produce nearly 40,000 tons of these specialty papers per year, providing flexible and customizable service to customers.
“This certification and the Recycling Champion award mean a lot to the team members at our New York mills,” said Twin Rivers Paper Environmental Supervisor Rick Petrie. “Environmental stewardship is extremely important to us at Twin Rivers Paper. With the great support of the OHSWA program and the dedication of our team, we have taken recycling and waste reduction at our New York operations to a new level and will continue that commitment.”
Twin Rivers was selected for the Recycling Champion Award based on their recycling and waste reduction efforts, including:
- Switching from fluorescent to LED lightbulbs
- Reprocessing waste paper generated through the manufacturing process and also accepting and reprocessing waste paper from buyers
- Reusing manufacturing materials or sending them back to the distributor
- Recycling office papers, bale wires, and cardboard cores from rolls of paper
- DEC Beneficial Use Determination of nutrient rich sediment in water tanks
“Twin Rivers has been a really great company to work with through our RecycleOne Certification program. We are very pleased with their efforts and are looking forward to seeing how they are able to expand on their efforts in the future,” said Authority Recycling Coordinator Eileen Brinck.
