The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority accepts Christmas trees generated during the holiday season at the Compost Site on Leland Avenue in Utica from January 3rd to January 31st. The Christmas trees are chipped and composted by the Authority for use by area gardeners in the Spring.
Contact your local municipality to see what the collection schedule and type of collection is for Christmas Trees (i.e. curbside or drop-off). Residents can also deliver trees during normal business hours Monday ? Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturday from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm to the Authority's Leland Avenue EcoDrop in Utica until January 31st.
To reduce waste, use only reusable decorations on your holiday tree and avoid items such as tinsel, which is hard to remove and reuse again. Tinsel causes a problem when we recycle the Christmas trees into compost and mulch. Christmas wreaths should be disposed of with your regular garbage. Real and artificial wreaths are held together with wire and plastic, so they cannot be safely composted.
Remember to remove stands, garland, tinsel, lights and ornaments before the tree is set out for recycling. Also, discard your plastic tree bag in the trash after the tree is placed at the curb.
